Special Needs

Eligibility

Eligibility is determined by the Transportation Specialist for Special needs students in consultation with Student Services specialists, teachers, and school administrators. Students with severe mobility restrictions are eligible for Transportation, which could be regular charter buses, special charter buses, taxis or Handi-bus.

  • Elementary Special Needs students for the most part are transported by Charter bus or taxi. All students are required to pay the transportation fee and complete the "Special Needs Transportation Charter" form in addition to the Charter Transportation Contract or the Application for Waiver of Fees.
  • Students in Junior and Senior High with mild/moderate disabilities typically receive the Calgary Transit Bus Pass Rebate.
Attendants
  • The use of attendants on Special Needs buses is generally to assist with the loading and unloading of passengers. There are some routes that have a large number of students with severe multi-handicaps or behaviour disorders that require attendants. Each route is assessed on an individual basis before an attendant is assigned.
  • Assigning an attendant to a route will not guarantee that student behaviour reports will not be submitted. The reports are a form of documenting behaviour and can be helpful if transportation has to be temporarily or permanently suspended.
Ride Times
  • Typically students on Special Needs buses must ride a longer time than those attending a designated bus receiver school. Buses have to travel over a much larger area to collect a few children.
  • Every effort is made to design efficient routes with the shortest ride times possible.
  • When practical, the first student picked up in the morning is dropped off first in the afternoon.
Alternate Pick Up and Drop Locations
  • Students will generally be transported to and from one address only.
  • Parents/guardians are responsible to transport their children to and from babysitters, respite care, appointments, etc.
  • If a parent wants a child dropped at a friend or neighbour's house that is in the immediate vicinity of the regular drop off, arrangements may be made ahead of time with the carrier's dispatcher.
  • Out of area pickup and drops cannot be accommodated.
Register For Special Needs Charter Transportation

All eligible riders must pay the applicable transportation fees. Fees are determined annually during the budget process and are typically approved by the Board of Trustees in the Spring for the following school year. Families experiencing financial difficulties may apply for a waiver of fees. The application for waiver is available at your child's school and on the CBE website.
