How much is your expired Calgary Transit Bus Pass worth?
If your student uses a monthly Calgary Transit bus pass to ride the CTS bus to school and is eligible for Calgary Board of Education subsidized transportation (CBE), you can apply for both a rebate from the CBE AND a Federal Tax Credit on your personal income tax return.
Here’s how it works:
- Complete the Calgary Transit Bus Pass Rebate form which is available at the school or on the CBE website: http://www.cbe.ab.ca/transportation/forms.asp
- Purchase a monthly bus pass from a vendor.
- Once the bus pass expires, have your student show the pass to the school office.
- The rebate will be deposited directly into your bank account on a monthly basis.
- The cost of the bus pass less the rebate portion can be claimed on your income tax return for the year.
Points to remember:
- Be sure to keep your expired bus passes and receipts.
- You have until end of June to claim your monthly bus pass rebates from the CBE for the school year. Check the back of the rebate form for current dates.
- If you intend to claim the income tax credit, you must keep your expired bus passes and receipts.
- If a bus pass is lost or stolen, the rebate can still be processed as long as you have proof of purchase.
