George Lane

George Lane, Trustee for Wards 6 & 7, is serving his third term as trustee.
George's career as an educator began in one of Alberta's last one-room schools southeast of Medicine Hat where he taught Grades 1 to 9. He later worked at the Saskatchewan Technical Institute, the University of Alberta, Concordia University and the University of Calgary. During those years he earned a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta and an MA and PhD from the University of Washington with majors in marketing, policy and administration.
Following six years as Dean of the Faculty of Management (now the Haskayne School of Business) at the University of Calgary, George continued to work at the University as Professor and Chairman of the Policy and Environment Area until his retirement in 1997. During his tenure as Dean, George was responsible for initiatives that led to the funding and construction of the Faculty's home, Scurfield Hall. He was also instrumental in establishing the MBA program, designing the PhD program, gaining accreditation from the AACSB for the undergraduate program in 1985 and MBA program in 1991 in addition to serving as founding President of the Management Education Coordinating Council of Alberta (MECCA).
Following retirement George and his wife, Marcia established Lane Townhomes, a division of 4L Enterprises, which built a number of townhouses in lower Mount Royal.
George has had extensive consulting experience, with clients such as the Universities of Windsor, Lethbridge, Sir George Williams (now Concordia) and Brandon. His other work experience has included positions with the City of Medicine Hat , the City of Calgary, Donovan Realty, and PanAmerican Petroleum (now Amoco).
In a volunteer capacity, George was a board member and found Chair of the Development Disabilities Resources Centre. He also volunteered as Governor and Treasurer of Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School for eleven years.
George's roots in Alberta are strong and deep. His grandfather operated and owned the Bar U Ranch, now a national historic site, and was instrumental in the beginnings of the Calgary Stampede. On his mother's side of the family, there have been several generations of teachers including his mother and grandmother. This long-time Calgarian counts among his immediate family his wife, two sons, two daughters-in-law and two granddaughters.
