Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD)
Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) provides a wide range of supports and services for families of children with severe disabilities. Specialized Services helps families to acquire the skills and strategies to promote their child’s development and participation in daily living activities at home and in the community.
Our Specialized Services
The Calgary Board of Education provides FSCD Specialized Services. To access these services, a child must first be approved by FSCD before a CBE multidisciplinary team becomes involved with a family. Once approved, the team may include a speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, behaviour analyst and/or psychologist.
At the CBE, our approach focuses on a family coaching model. Some of the key components are as follows:
- We take a child and family centred approach to delivering specialized services that views the whole family as the focus and engages parents as active partners.
- Our school-based and Specialized Services supports are coordinated, integrated and consistent from home to school through a single service plan.
- We build on the strengths, knowledge, skills and assets of the child, family, community and team. Everyone involved in the child’s life will be better able to respond to the unique needs of the child. Our team works with parents to help build their capacity to support their child at home and in the community.
- We take a flexible approach to service delivery that is responsive to the needs of the child and family.
