The Calgary Board of Education is scheduled to open a second elementary school in the community of Cranston during the 2020-2021 school year. The opening of this school will have an impact on grade configurations and attendance areas for existing CBE schools in the Cranston community. On Sept. 18 we held an open house for the community to learn about the changes. Thank you to everyone who attended.

The information presented at the open house can be found in Supporting Documents.

School Opening Delayed

May 27, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I’m very excited for the start of our school year and the opening of our new school. I know that you and your children are excited too, especially with everything that has changed during COVID-19. Everyone is working hard to get our school open, but unfortunately it will not be ready to open on Sept. 1 due to delays that have occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A contingency plan has been developed. All students will be temporarily accommodated in the two existing schools in Cranston. A revised opening date will be confirmed by early September.

Starting on Sept. 1, Sibylla Kiddle School will temporarily operate out of the schools listed in the chart below.

Grades School
Kindergarten to Grade 2 Cranston School
Grades 3 - 4 Dr. George Stanley School

Sibylla Kiddle School will operate as a “school within a school” meaning that students attend classes with the same classmates and teachers as they will have at the new school. The two schools will operate separately, but of course cooperatively. We will have our own leadership team, teachers and support staff.

At Cranston School, we will have a dedicated wing along the south end of the school. Our lunch time will be adjusted compared to Cranston School in order to allow our students to build their new community relationships and to prevent crowding.
At Dr. George Stanley School, we will be accommodated by having separate classrooms in the north end of the west portables with our own dedicated entrance and exit. Our hours (see below) will also be offset from Dr. George Stanley School allowing for less congestion during entry and exit. We will also have a separate lunch break from our host school community.

Sibylla Kiddle hours will remain as planned. They are as follows:

  • Monday – Thursday: 8 a.m. – 2:35 p.m.
  • Friday: 8 – 11:45 p.m.

Transportation may be available to the temporary locations. For fees and service levels, please visit the CBE Transportation website.

I look forward to seeing all of the students in September.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at or 403-817-3432.
