WHAT IS KINDERGARTEN?

The Calgary Board of Education's Kindergarten program is guided by the philosophy of the Alberta Education Kindergarten Program Statement. This program supports the uniqueness, integrity and worth of every child. Alberta Education funds the Kindergarten program.

Kindergarten addresses all dimensions of a child’s development. It builds upon what children have already learned in their home and community settings. In Kindergarten, children explore and experiment with their environment and learn how to interact with others. This helps them to value themselves as capable and competent learners. The program offers children opportunities to:

  • develop skills in language arts, science, mathematics, social studies and the fine arts
  • develop decision-making skills
  • enhance personal and social responsibility
  • communicate effectively
  • demonstrate their knowledge in different ways

Most programs are half-day, offered either in the morning or in the afternoon. Hours and days of operation vary from school to school. Full day Kindergarten is available in some schools for children living in that school’s community.

WHEN DOES MY CHILD ATTEND KINDERGARTEN?

A child who turns four years old on or before March 1st can attend Kindergarten in the fall of that same calendar year. Kindergarten is an optional program but children must start school if they are six years old as of September 1.

Kindergarten information sessions for parents are usually held at each school before the end of June.

HOW CAN I SUPPORT MY CHILD'S LEARNING IN KINDERGARTEN?

As a parent, you are your child's first and most important teacher and will play an on-going role in your child's education. Volunteer in the classroom or become a member of the school council. Research shows that if parents are involved in the school, children learn better.

Most importantly, you can support your child at home by talking about the school day and displaying his or her work. We have put together a document called: “Preparing your Child for School” which has some simple ideas on preparing your child for Kindergarten. Also provided is a document entitled "Ideas for Parents " which outlines a number of simple, enjoyable activities for you to try at home with your Kindergarten-aged child throughout the school year.

FULL-DAY KINDERGARTEN

Since September 2005, the Calgary Board of Education has provided full-day Kindergarten programs in designated schools. These schools were identified as having large numbers of children who would benefit most from additional time at school to help them achieve the learning outcomes of Alberta Education’s Kindergarten curriculum. Factors used to determine full-day Kindergarten schools include an equity factor, which may result in children not having prior experiences that help prepare them for school, and an ESL/ELL factor that indicates a high percentage of children who require additional time for English language learning.

In these identified schools, parents are advised that participation in the full-day Kindergarten program is optional, with a half-day program being available for those children whose parents prefer that option. Registrations for full-day Kindergarten can be accepted only for children living in the school’s designated area.
