French Immersion is the most predominant alternative language program within the Calgary Board of Education. French is used as the language of instruction beginning in Kindergarten or Grade 1 and continuing to Grade 12.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Entry points - Kindergarten or Grade 1
  • Proportion of French to English
    • Kindergarten, Grade 1 and 2:
      100% French (No English is taught, English Language Arts is formally introduced in Grade 3)
    • Grade 3:
      80% French; 20% English (English Language Arts is formally introduced)
    • Grades 4, 5 and 6:
      70% French; 30% English
  • Subjects taught in French:
  • Grades 7, 8 and 9:
    French Language Arts; Mathematics; Science; Social Studies
  • Grades 10, 11 and 12:
    French Language Arts; Social Studies; Mathematics
