With the tremendous increase in Calgary's population in the last five years and many families deciding to live in new, suburban communities, new schools are needed. We also need to modernize existing schools, many of which are more than 50 years old, to meet the learning needs of students.
New School Projects
Each year, Alberta Education reviews CBE's
Three-Year School Capital Plan and decides which projects to fund and at what stage. The CBE works closely with Alberta Infrastructure, The City of Calgary and the development industry throughout the school building process.
Once construction begins, we share regular updates through the
Construction Projects Status Report. As a new school nears completion, families impacted by the opening will start receiving more detailed information. All updates are posted on our website and individual project pages.
On average it takes 3-4 years to deliver elementary and middle schools and 4-5 years to deliver a high school.
Below is a list of new school projects (projects are linked to additional information as soon as project progress allows):
Existing School Projects
Capital investment into existing schools can take many different forms (project types) as follows:
-
Addition to existing school: provides additional permanent space for schools that are undersized for the needs of the community it serves.
-
Modernization of an existing school: provides for the renovation of a whole or part of a school building for both present and future educational programs.
-
Replacement of an existing school: occurs when a school building’s condition has deteriorated sufficiently, and it becomes more economical to replace the school with a new facility.
-
Solution: provides an integrated solution where to meet the project delivery objective, more than one school facility will require construction activity.

Community Information Sessions
The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and Alberta Infrastructure hosts community information sessions for new school projects when the reach their preliminary design stage. During this time, we invite the public from impacted communities, as well as local members of government to attend and learn more about the upcoming school projects.
The events are structured as a drop-in format, and allow attendees to browse the design displays, ask questions directly to the project and design team, and share their feedback about the proposed school designs and planning process.
Upcoming information sessions will be posted here when available. Please note, new school projects are funded and managed by Alberta Infrastructure and we will share updated when available on individual project pages listed below.
