Retirement Benefits Package

The Calgary Board of Education provides benefit coverage to its employees and their dependents during retirement years.

Generally, the plan includes hospital and medical expenses that are not covered by Alberta Health and Wellness, basic and major dental expenses and life insurance.

When a retiree turns age 65, they will be issued a paid-up life policy in the amount of $5,000. All benefits will cease at the end of the month in which you reach age 65, however, you will have the option of taking the paid up life insurance.

Sun Life Retirement Benefit Plan

Sun Life coverage is optional. Employees are covered by the CBE group plan the day preceding retirement, and must be at least 55 years of age with 10 years of service. The Termination of Coverage is on the last day of the month in which the employee reaches age 65. The plan includes life insurance, dental and extended health benefits:

Benefits After Age 65

Once employees reach the age of 65, they are no longer covered under the Sun Life group benefit plan. These seniors may apply for Alberta Blue Cross’s individual health plans. The coverage provided by Blue Cross includes premium-free and paid plans for seniors. Visit Seniors health benefits and Blue Cross's Coverage Options.

Dental and Optical Assistance

Seniors Financial Assistance offers additional dental and optical coverage to qualifying individuals. You can find out more on the Alberta Health website for Financial Assistance for Seniors.
