Brrr!! Taking the bus during
severe and extreme cold weather!!

As the seasons change and the weather becomes colder and more severe, it’s important for parents and students to remember to dress warmly and think smartly, especially when it comes to riding the bus. The Calgary Board of Education reminds everyone that they should be prepared for potentially bad weather conditions. Here’s what you need to know….

  1. CBE schools rarely close due to snow or cold temperatures. Assume that schools are open unless you hear otherwise through the media or directly from the school.
  2. Schools need to remain open even under the most severe weather conditions to provide attending students with a safe and secure environment.
  3. All buses will be running, but could experience delays due to traffic and hazardous road conditions.
  4. Parents/guardians always make the final decision as to whether or not it is safe to send their child to school. If parents decide to send their child to school when the weather is severe, the school will be open to receive them. No student will ever be reprimanded for missing school in bad weather.
  5. Students, especially younger students, should be well prepared for extreme weather and have very clear instructions on what to do if the bus does not arrive. Children should be escorted to their bus stop and parents should remain with them until the bus arrives. Parents should have back-up arrangements in case of an emergency. That plan should be written down, communicated with children and the paper copy put into the student’s school bag.

My School Bus Monitor is a great online resource for families, where you can find information about charter school bus route delays. Parents and students are encouraged to visit this site before heading to the bus stop, especially during cold and severe weather. Check this site as a regular part of your morning routine and avoid surprises at the bus stop!

Please be advised that due to the heavy volume of bus delays on extremely cold or severe weather days, it will be very difficult for My School Bus Monitor to convey all of the late school bus information in a timely manner. The CBE suggests that you expect the possibility of delays on these types of mornings.
