Board Ratifies Collective Agreement with Bargaining Council of the CBE Construction and Maintenance Skilled Trades Unions

Jan. 30, 2024

The Board of Trustees of the Calgary Board of Education has ratified a new collective agreement with The Bargaining Council of the CBE Construction and Maintenance Skilled Trades Unions. The previous agreement expired in August 2021.

“We recognize the work of skilled tradespeople as being invaluable to students' success,” said Laura Hack, chair, Board of Trustees. “Their expertise in maintaining and enhancing our facilities creates outstanding learning environments.

“In reaching this new agreement, we have found the right balance between our fiscal responsibilities and the need to attract and retain top-quality staff with market-sensitive compensation.”

The new agreement is effective Sept. 1, 2021, until Aug. 1, 2024. Approximately 100 CBE employees are covered under the new agreement, encompassing roles such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters and other skilled trades.

"This agreement acknowledges the important role our members play in sustaining and advancing the organization,” said Brad Dougherty, chair, Trades Bargaining Council. “We believe the agreement demonstrates respect for the skilled workers who provide indispensable contributions to the system.

“We remain committed to building on this foundation and look forward to continuing to work together for a brighter future.”

The agreement provides for a 1.25 per cent increase to hourly rates effective June 1, 2023, and 1.5 per cent increase effective February 1, 2024. In addition, the agreement addresses issues with specific positions as well as changes related to improved recruitment practices and allowance increases for safety footwear, clothing, moving personal tools between worksites, and the storage and transportation of CBE tools. The increase of these allowances improves safety and trade staff's working conditions.

This agreement comes after a year of negotiation, underlining the commitment and collaborative effort between the Calgary Board of Education and the Trade Bargaining Council to reach a mutually beneficial arrangement. The updated collective agreement will be posted on the CBE website once available.
