In the Calgary Board of Education, School Fees and Central Fees are charged for different purposes:
School Fees
Fees are unique for each school or class, and are used to cover the cost of their specific activities:
- Field trips and excursions
- Optional courses and activities
- Enhanced learning resources
- Extracurricular programs
- School-specific supplies or materials
These fees can vary from school to school depending on the programs and activities offered.
Central Fees
These are system-wide services and are the same for all schools. This includes:
- Student supplies, like pens, pencils, erasers, and other tools students need from their first day in class
- Transportation (busing) for eligible students
- Lunch supervision for students who remain at school over their lunch break
Central fees help cover services that are administered centrally rather than by individual schools.

School-Based Fees
Some fees are unique for school or class, and are used to cover the cost of specific activities, field trips, items or services. You can find the range of approved fees for your school in the School Fee Guide.
The School Fee Guide outlines the range of fees parents may be charged for extracurricular activities, complementary courses and field trips. Depending on specific circumstances, the actual fees charged may be less than the maximum amounts shown in the guide.
Each school has the discretion to determine its fees. While the School Fee Guide outlines the maximum costs, individual schools may set fees based on their unique needs and resources.
School-based fees are not covered by a central fee waiver. If you have concerns about the affordability of school-based fees, please contact your school directly.
Central Fees
Fees for student supplies, transportation and lunch supervision are the same for all schools.
Student Supplies
The student supplies fee applies to all students in kindergarten through Grade 6. The fee offsets the cost of purchasing supplies like pens, pencils, and erasers so that students have the tools they need learn from their first day in class.

The CBE buys supplies in bulk to reduce costs for families. These are the same supplies families purchase themselves in other jurisdictions.
Transportation
Fees cover the costs of providing safe, reliable, efficient, and sustainable bus transportation services for students. These fees ensure that the cost of busing and other transportation services is not taken from the funding allocated for classroom teaching and learning.

Lunch Supervision
Fees can be paid in monthly instalments and apply to all students who register for the lunch supervision program, even if they are absent.

Central Fee Refunds
Cancellation of transportation or lunch supervision services require notice prior to the provision of a refund. Cancellations are accepted up to April 30 each year.
Refunds are not provided for days when service is missed due to illness or vacation
Students Assigned to Calgary Transit
Students who use Calgary Transit must purchase monthly bus passes directly from participating retailers, including many convenience and grocery stores.
Families may also apply for the City of Calgary’s Fair Entry Program, which provides reduced transit fares through a streamlined application process for City subsidy programs including reduced rates for transit passes.
