At the Calgary Board of Education, learning is designed to help students build the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for success in school and beyond. Through the Alberta curriculum, CBE teachers create meaningful learning opportunities that encourage curiosity, critical thinking and personal growth. Assessment is woven into everyday classroom experiences, helping teachers understand student progress, provide feedback and guide next steps in learning. Reporting provides families with clear information about student achievement and growth throughout the school year.
Curriculum
In Alberta, curriculum or Programs of Study are determined by Alberta Education & Childcare. The curriculum identifies what students are expected to learn and do in all subjects from kindergarten to Grade 12. You can find the K–6 Curriculum and the current Gr. 7–12 | Programs of Study on the Alberta Education website.
The CBE does not decide what is taught in its schools, however CBE teachers decide how the curriculum is taught in their classrooms.
New K-6 Curriculum Development & Implementation
Starting in September 2025, the new Social Studies curriculum was implemented in K—3 classrooms.
Since beginning the renewal process in 2019, Alberta Education and Childcare has implemented new K—6 curriculum in:
- English Language Arts and Literature
- French Language Arts and Literature
- Mathematics
- Physical Education and Wellness
- Science

Assessment & Reporting
Understanding Assessment & Reporting
We know it is important for parents/guardians to understand how their children are doing in school. Research shows that students are more successful with active parent/guardian involvement.
The report card is one component in communicating student learning. In addition to the report card, schools communicate with parents/guardians about student progress on an ongoing basis in a variety of ways.
Assessment happens every day, in every classroom, throughout the school year. Assessing a student’s progress is one of the most important ways we support the continued learning of our students.

Provincial assessment programs are meant to complement, not replace, day-to-day teacher observations and classroom assessment.
