Staying for Lunch
Students are not required to remain at school over the lunch period, but for any Grade 1-6 or full-day kindergarten students who stay at school over the lunch period, the CBE provides a mandatory lunch supervision service. Students in these grades must be supervised (see Administrative Regulation 3048 – Noon Services and the Education Act for more details), and the lunch supervision fees cover the related supervision costs.
Check With Your School
Principals have the flexibility to decisions for the lunch supervision service at their school depending on factors like the number of students and spaces suitable for lunchtime use. Please check with your school for specific information about their lunch supervision program. Some schools will allow students who normally go home over the lunch break to remain at school occasionally. The student will be charged a daily drop-in fee and expected to adhere to the same rules and expectations for all other students during the lunch period.
How to Register
Lunch supervision registration continues throughout the year and payments can only be accepted once students are registered.
You can register and pay using your MyCBE parent account.
The CBE has a waiver process for families who can’t afford to pay the fees.
Fees
Fees can be paid in monthly instalments and apply to all students who register for the lunch supervision program, even if they are absent.

What's Included
Lunch Supervision Service Requirements
Anyone using the lunch supervision service must accept the Lunch Supervision Terms and Conditions / Cancellation and Refund Policy.
The student code of conduct applies at lunch time just like it does during class time. Learn more about Student Expectations for any students using the lunch supervision service.
The lunch supervision service includes:
- A dedicated, safe and caring space for students to eat lunch
- Supervision by paid lunchroom supervisors throughout the entire lunch period, unless a student is signed out by a parent/guardian
- Students remaining on school grounds, unless written permission is provided by a parent/guardian
- Daily attendance tracking
- Income tax receipts that may be claimed as childcare expenses
The lunch supervision service does NOT include:
- Access to food or snacks; students are required to bring a lunch
- Access to hot water, microwave, dishes, utensils or other cooking facilities

Lunchtime Tips
What to Bring for Lunch
- Students in the lunch program at the elementary level need to bring lunch as cafeteria service only becomes available in some middle schools, and in high schools.
- We encourage the use of an insulated flask (eg. Thermos™) for hot lunches as most schools have phased out supplying microwaves and/or hot water due to safety.
- In some schools, to help bridge the nutritional needs of students when necessary, lunch and snack programs are supported by a number of organizations such as Calgary Boys and Girls Club, Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids, the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank and the Meals on Wheels, Hot Soup Program.
Lunchtime Activities
Some schools offer clubs, intramurals, or other lunchtime activities. Students in the lunch supervision program are still eligible to participate in these activities, but be aware that any activity fees for lunchtime programs (related to the cost of equipment or materials for those programs) are not covered by lunch supervision service fees.
