Overview
Demand for student spaces continues to put pressure across Calgary as communities grow and change. To support student learning, the CBE through funding and management from the Alberta Government, builds new schools in developing areas, invests in existing schools through additions, modernization and replacements, and installs modular classrooms to help address immediate capacity needs where appropriate.
Before design and construction can start, projects must receive provincial funding approval. CBE identifies and prioritizes capital project requests through its capital planning process, considering factors such as enrolment pressures, facility condition, program needs and community growth. School Capital Construction Projects
Each year, Alberta Education reviews CBE’s Three-Year School Capital Plan to determine which projects will be funded and at what stage. The CBE works with provincial and municipal partners throughout planning and construction.

Modular classrooms help address enrolment pressures by adding flexible learning spaces to schools where additional student space is needed immediately. Each year, the CBE submits a request, through the Modular Classroom Program, to Alberta Education ∓ Childcare for funding approval of modular classroom projects. Modular classrooms can be added, relocated, replaced or removed as enrolment needs change.
