Attending school regularly helps students remain engaged in learning and connected to their school community, supporting their sense of belonging and overall success.
Parents are asked to notify the school when their child will be absent prior to the start of the school day. Informing the school about students’ absences helps ensure each student is accounted for and plays an important role in supporting student safety.
Under the Education Act, students who are 6 years of age or older on September 1 and under 16 years of age are required to attend school regularly and punctually. When a student misses 10% or more of instructional time, this is considered chronic absenteeism and may signal a need for additional support.
We recognize that many factors can impact a student’s attendance, including health-related concerns or other personal issues. If attending regularly becomes a challenge, parents are encouraged to connect with their child’s school so that staff and families can work together to understand the circumstances affecting attendance and identify appropriate support when needed.
Schools respond to student absenteeism concerns in accordance with the Education Act and related regulations, with a focus on supporting students in achieving regular attendance and engagement with learning.
Suspensions / Expulsions
Parents accompany students at a meeting with school administration if they are suspended from their community school for longer than five days (unless an independent student). A determination is then made to reinstate the student in the community school or expel according to Section 37 of the Education Act – Chapter E-0.3 and Suspension and Expulsion | Administrative Regulation 6007.
Following the Board Delegate's decision, students must then be reinstated to the suspending school or directed to an appropriate available educational program. Various family and school actions result from the expulsion hearing to ensure success for the student.
