Bus Routes
Families can find bus route, stop location and stop time information through MyCBE, once a student has been added to a route.
- The stop time shown is the time the bus leaves the stop.
- Buses will not wait past the scheduled departure time, nor return to stops once they have left.
- Please be at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus stop time, morning and afternoon.
- The afternoon bus stop times are an estimate and can change based on traffic, weather, and ridership variances.
- Bus routes are created based on registrations received by the deadline. Routes and stop locations may change during the school year or from year to year.
To request a change, families can fill out the Bus Stop Change Request Form in MyCBE.
Please note, drivers do not determine stop locations and cannot accommodate requests to change stop times or locations. All requests must come through CBE Transportation.
Bus Stops
Families are responsible for student safety to, from, and at the bus stop
Bus stop directions are not sent through email or provided over the phone.
To plan your route from home to the bus stop, use free tools like Google Maps. You can click on the "See on Map" link in the bus stop description from MyCBE to open the bus stop location in Google Maps. If there is a discrepancy between the bus stop description and the Google Maps location, the bus stop description will be considered accurate and should be followed.
Each bus stop includes the following details:
- Direction: Northbound/Eastbound/Southbound/Westbound (This is the direction the bus will be travelling).
- Street Name (1st): The street on which the bus stop will be located
- Before/After: Whether the stop is before or after the cross street
- Street Name (2nd): The cross street the bus stop will be located before or after
- NW/NE/SE/SW: The quadrant of the city where the bus stop is located
- Landmark: A landmark that provides a visible location to identify the bus stop
Example
At a bus stop location of "Eastbound Main Street after Main Avenue NE at the CT Stop", the bus stop would be located:
- On the south side of Main Street (since the bus would be travelling eastbound)
- After Main Avenue NE
- At a CT (Calgary Transit) Stop
School Bus Stop Location Criteria
The CBE Transportation department determines bus stop locations based on several factors, the primary focus being safety. Routes are designed based on registrations received by the annual deadline, in conjunction with administrative regulations and guidelines for the program of attendance.
Preferred locations for school bus stops include:
- Calgary Transit stops
- Green spaces
- Other publicly accessible facilities as they provide space for students to collect and when possible, for parents to park
School bus stops are on residential collector roads whenever possible to avoid the bus travelling on local side streets, where a variety of obstructions can exist.
Other factors considered include:
- Safe distance from intersection (25 metres)
- Speed on roadway (60 km/hr or below)
- Ride time
- Route flow
- Efficiency
- Construction
- Turn restrictions
- A grouping of 10 eligible riders pre-registered by the deadline (congregated stops for alternative programs only)
- Other information relevant to a specific community
Congregated Stops
Students attending Alternative Programs access general transportation under a congregated stop model. Congregated stops are used when students from the same or multiple nearby communities congregate or gather at one stop to take a bus to their chosen school. A congregated stop is added to a community once there is a group of at least 10 students, all of whom registered by the annual deadline in June.
Congregated stops may be beyond walking distance from a student’s home. Families are responsible for student safety to, from, and at the bus stop and may be required to arrange for transportation to and from the congregated stop. If the congregated stop is over 5 km or is further from home than the school, it will be considered unfeasible, and you will be notified prior to the start of the school year.
The routes and stops are final, and changes will not be made based on new registrations or the route students must travel to get to the stop location. Students who are registered after the June deadline will be added to the closest bus with available space, which may not be the closest congregated stop.
When CBE selects a congregated stop location, we look at a number of factors including student safety at the bus stop, ease of access for the bus, route flow, public space for students to gather and available parking for parents. Learn more about What Safety Means to CBE Transportation Services.
Information regarding students in Grades 6 and up who are designated to Designated to Calgary Transit is available on our website, as is information about school Fees & Waivers.
Parent Pick-Up at the Bus
- Families of kindergarten students are asked to meet their child at the door of the bus to ensure their safety. Drivers only ensure kindergarten students and students who receive door-to-door specialized transportation are met by a parent or guardian.
- If you would like your child in Grade 1 and up, who does not receive door-to-door specialized transportation, to be met by a parent or guardian at the door of the bus, please send an email to transportation@cbe.ab.ca, and a note will be added to the route.
Ride Times
In general, ride times are an hour or less each way. Due to the distance some students must travel to alternative or specialized programs, ride times may be longer in some cases.
