Project Types

School construction projects may include:

• New Schools
  New schools are built to support developing communities and accommodate current and future student enrolment.
• Additions
  Additions provide permanent space at existing schools that require additional capacity to serve students in their area.
• Modernizations
  Modernizations renovate all or part of an existing school building to support current and future educational programming.
• Replacements
  Replacement projects involve constructing a new facility to replace an aging school.
• Solution Projects
  Solution Projects involve construction activity at multiple school sites to address broader student accommodation and infrastructure needs.

Capital Project Approval Process

Once approved for funding, school construction projects generally move through three stages:

1. Planning
   During this stage, project requirements are confirmed, partnerships are established and preliminary project work begins.
2. Design
   Building designs are developed and refined, site planning is completed and construction documents are prepared.
3. Construction
   Construction activities begin and continue until the project is complete and ready for occupancy. On average it takes 3-4 years to deliver elementary and middle schools and 4-5 years to deliver a high school. Project timelines vary depending on factors such as project scope, site readiness and construction requirements.
