Strong school communities are built on partnership. Families and schools share the same goal: helping students learn, grow and thrive.
Parents and guardians are essential partners in education. The relationships between families and CBE staff are an important part of supporting student success, and we value the questions, perspectives and advocacy families bring to their child’s education.
Most interactions between families and CBE staff are positive, collaborative and focused on supporting students. From time to time, however, conversations can be difficult or emotions run high. Clear expectations for how we engage with one another help ensure those conversations remain constructive and respectful.
The Education Act sets expectations for students, parents, school divisions and others who participate in school communities. These expectations reinforce the importance of respectful interactions and positive learning environments.
This school year, CBE is taking action to make these expectations clearer and more accessible. The first of these steps include:
- We have updated Administrative Regulation 5002, Responsibilities of Parents.
- Beginning in October, new signage will be introduced in CBE schools and worksites outlining expectations for respectful conduct.
These actions are intended to support positive relationships and help address concerns before situations escalate. Questions, concerns and disagreement are an important part of working together. However, behaviour that becomes abusive, threatening or significantly disrupts a safe learning or working environment will not be accepted.
Safe, caring and respectful school communities are a shared responsibility. When families, students and staff work together with respect and a commitment to finding a way forward, we create the conditions where students and the people who support them can succeed.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for the important role you play in your child’s education and in our CBE community.
