New Modular Classrooms

On October 6, the Board of Trustees approved the 2027-2028 Modular Classroom Program.

The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is requesting 26 new modular classrooms across six schools, as well as four replacement modulars and the demolition of three aging modular classrooms. If approved by the provincial government, these classrooms would create approximately 625 additional student spaces. Any modular classrooms approved through this Program are expected to be constructed and installed for the 2028-29 school year.

Modular classrooms provide additional learning space and help address enrolment pressures while longer-term solutions, such as new schools and school additions, are planned and constructed. All new units requested would help relieve enrolment pressure at schools with projected utilization between 99 to 114 per cent within the next three years.

Since 2024, CBE has received 114 new modulars representing 2,850 learning spaces across Calgary. Of these, 55 modular units are in various stages of installation and are expected to be ready for the 2027-2028 school year.

School boards are required to submit annual modular classroom requests to the provincial government by Nov. 1. The addition, replacement and removal of modular classrooms are subject to provincial approval and funding. Requests submitted by school authorities across Alberta are evaluated using several criteria, including current and projected enrolment, utilization rates and accommodation needs.

In addition to the approved modular classrooms, the CBE has 25 new schools, replacements, additions and modernizations in various stages of planning and construction. These investments help create additional learning spaces across the system while also renewing aging modular infrastructure.

More information about current modular classroom projects or current school construction projects can be found on the Modular Classrooms - Calgary Board of Education.
