On March 23, 2018, the CBE received funding from Alberta Education to design a new high school on a site located in the north Calgary community of Coventry Hills. Alberta Education announced construction funding for the north high school in November 2019. Anticipated opening is September 2024.

According to the Three-Year School Capital Plan 2020-2023 (Approved - March 12, 2019), the primary catchment population for a north high school would be the Northern Hills communities, consisting of Harvest Hills, Coventry Hills (including Country Hills Village), Country Hills (north/south) and Panorama Hills, as well as the Hidden Valley community to the west. Combined, these five communities have a population of approximately 70,000 people.

The proposed attendance area for the North Calgary High School is available on the Community Engagement section of CBE website. This information was shared during the first two phases of the High School engagement in 2019. Maps and enrolment projections are available on High School Engagement Historical Information.

In addition to the Northern Hills communities, there are several communities further north in the sector (e.g. Evanston, Sage Hill, Nolan Hill, etc.) that are still developing and the total population build-out is approximately 118,000 people over the next 15 to 20 years. The long-term designation for these communities will be impacted by the next phase of the high school engagement.

We are in the midst of a system wide high school engagement to balance enrolment across 20 high schools. Decisions will be made by December 2021 with implementation of any changes happening beginning in the 2022-23 school year.

Two scenarios have been developed to balance enrolment at CBE high schools and offer students access, flexibility and choice in programming given available space and resources. These scenarios are now available on the CBE website. There is also information about how students, parents and community members can participate on Shaping the Future of High School

The feedback gathered will be evaluated, a proposed plan will then be developed for further feedback and a decision will be communicated by December 2021.
