Annie Gale School requires upgrades to ensure it can continue supporting students long-term. This includes improvements to the roof, mechanical and electrical systems, and all interior learning spaces.
Once modernized, the school will have updated washrooms, hallways, open areas and classrooms, with a focus on updated Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) spaces such as construction, foods and art. Spaces for physical education will allow for greater division of large groups of students to better serve their learning needs.
Preparation work is scheduled to begin in July 2026 and is expected to continue through August 2029. Renovated spaces will be made available for use once construction is completed in each phase. These timelines may shift as the project progresses.
Annie Gale School will remain operational throughout the modernization. Construction will be completed in phased sections of the building. A small number of homerooms will be temporarily housed at Colonel J. Fred Scott School (CJFSS).
Students that will be accommodated at CJFSS are still registered to Annie Gale School and will remain part of the school community. These students and staff will move between the two schools to maintain continuity of learning while ensuring student and staff safety.
Which classes will temporarily relocate to Colonel J. Fred Scott School?
At this time, we anticipate that only Grades 6 and 7 from the Traditional Learning Centre (TLC) program will need to be temporarily accommodated at Colonel J. Fred Scott School. These classes will be located close together and the programming will remain appropriate for their grade level.
These grades were selected because it allows for the most effective use of available classroom space at Annie Gale School while minimizing transitions for students and staff between schools. This approach represents the least disruptive option for students, staff, and families.
There will be some student and staff movement between the two buildings based on programming needs. Students remaining at Annie Gale School will continue to be accommodated within the school, using unaffected classrooms as well as newly created temporary learning spaces.
Why Colonel J. Fred Scott School?
Colonel J. Fred Scott School is the nearest school with available space and is located directly across the field from Annie Gale School, making it the least disruptive option for students and families. The walk between the two schools is approximately one minute, resulting in no changes to bell times and no impact on students who use Calgary Transit. Students will continue to stay connected to Annie Gale School staff and programming throughout the transition.
How long will the temporary relocation last?
Each group of relocated classrooms will move only for the duration required to renovate their section of the building. Specific timelines will be shared once the phasing plan is finalized.
What will the plan look like during each year of construction?
The modernization will occur in three major phases. Each phase affects different parts of the building and may require temporary relocation of some programs or classes.
The plan outlined below is subject to change as planning progresses. Any changes will be communicated as needed.
Year 1 (2026–27)
- South Wing will be blocked off.
- The woodshop and respective programming will be unavailable.
- Main floor washrooms will be closed.
Year 2 (2027–28)
- Second floor will be blocked off.
- The library and science lab will move to temporary spaces within the school. These spaces will remain functional but will be reduced in size and capacity.
Year 3 (2028–29)
- Specialized classrooms including for foods, arts, and band will be unavailable during this phase.
More detailed timelines will be shared once the phasing plan is finalized.
How will safety be ensured?
Construction areas will be sealed off from learning spaces. CBE project managers and contractors will work closely with school administration at both schools to ensure ongoing safety. Any potential impacts related to construction will be communicated through timely updates.
Will there be changes to programs or designations?
School designations will not change. In terms of programming, Annie Gale School is expected to offer a mix of fine arts and Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) courses on a rotational schedule and continue offering the Traditional Learning Centre (TLD) program for Grades 6 to 9.
When will families receive more details?
Families will receive additional updates as needed, including information about impacts on students and staff, key project milestones and any construction-related changes.
