The following statement was provided by Chair Joy Bowen-Eyre on behalf of the Board of Trustees in response to the release of the Initial Report: Calgary Board of Education Operational Review, September 2017.

The Calgary Board of Education has welcomed the operational review of our system by the Minister of Education and worked closely with ministry staff this summer. We are pleased to receive this report and will continue to work in collaboration with Alberta Education for the best interests of our more than 120,000 students at 245 schools across the city.

The report has not found anything that the CBE has not already made available through reports to government, annual audits and publicly disclosed information. We hope that through this review, the Minister has gained a better understanding of the operational complexities that exist within such a large and diverse school system and the financial constraints under which we operate. We continue to be confident in our sound financial practices and budget history.

For the past two years, the CBE has been working towards developing a long-term, sustainable transportation system. We made a number of scheduled changes for the 2017-18 school year that have eliminated the need to subsidize the costs of transportation from the larger CBE budget. We will continue to ensure the delivery of safe, fiscally sustainable and efficient transportation for students.
