CBE Schools Celebrate the Year of the Dog

CALGARY — Three CBE schools are celebrating the Chinese New Year with special performances and activities on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018. Media are invited to attend these events. Chinese New Year takes place on Friday, Feb. 16, 2018.

Marion Carson School, Midnapore School and Highwood School are three CBE schools offering the Mandarin Bilingual program. Bilingual programming provides a rich environment for the learning of languages, cultures and subject area content. Bilingual education strives to provide intensive language learning environments, with the potential for high academic achievement and enriched cultural experiences that maximize student opportunities for learning.

Highwood School

The kindergarten to Grade 4 Mandarin Bilingual Program students at Highwood School will welcome in the Year of the Dog with a special Chinese New Year Performance at the Jubilee Auditorium. 

The theme of this year’s celebration is Footprints of our Ancestors: A blended celebration of Chinese New Year and Indigenous Ways of knowing, being, and doing.  The special guest is Elder Randy Bottle Saa’kokoto, from Kainai Nation. The celebration include Chinese songs, culture-rich performances, martial arts demonstrations and a traditional lion dance. This year’s production was done in collaboration with the talented artists from Quest Theatre group, who did a two-week residency with the students of Highwood School.  Students will be available for interviews and photos.

Marion Carson School

Students in the Mandarin Bilingual Program at Marion Carson School are preparing to celebrate Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dog. The students in the Mandarin program are practicing and putting together their performance, which will include traditional Chinese dancing, singing and musical performances. Over 220 children from Kindergarten to Grade 4 will be participating. Students will be available for interviews and photos.

Midnapore School

Midnapore School is welcoming the Year of the Dog, with a child-centred Chinese New Year Concert. Students, staff and guests are invited to wear red to celebrate the New Year.
