Statement | CBE Cancels Some International Trips

Feb. 27, 2020

The Calgary Board of Education believes in the educational value of international travel and that the safety of our students and staff is of highest importance.
As a system we have rigorous processes in place leading up to, and during international travel. Recent health events across the globe surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) have caused us to take time to reflect on trips outside of Canada.

Given current travel advisories and the daily changes in public health information being released, the Calgary Board of Education has made the decision to cancel five trips to Italy, Japan and Taiwan that were scheduled for March and April. Other international travel is still under review and trips are currently scheduled to proceed but could be cancelled at any time.

This was an extremely difficult decision, and one we did not make lightly. We will be meeting with impacted families next week to discuss the decision and review next steps.
