True Colours: Creative Arts Program for Students with a Visual Impairment

CALGARY — The Calgary Board of Education invites media to attend True Colours, a three-day creative arts program for students who are blind or visually impaired. 

From an early age, students with low vision often participate in music classes, but perhaps there are times when they feel frustrated that the activities in music, art or PE classes (involving dance) are quite fast-paced or the activities are not adapted for low vision and blindness. The CBE Vision Team is offering an opportunity for students to enjoy multiple days of adapted activities specifically designed to enhance students’ experiences in areas of the creative arts such as dance, music and art with more of a hands-on, multi-sensory approach.

Attending a short-term program with a focus on the creative arts will also provide an opportunity for students to share their common interests and talents with one another. Students will participate in large (all students) and small (according to grade/age) group activities. They will be creating a three-day art project, add to their musical repertoire with African drumming and learn some new dance moves. Most of all, it is a time for students to get to know each other better, build on existing friendships, make some new friends  and have fun while they learn!
