Update | Hub Online Learning Approach

Aug. 12, 2020

Dear CBE Families,

We are pleased to provide you with more information about the hub online learning approach developed for the 2020-21 school year. This online learning option has been created specifically for families choosing to have their children remain at home due to COVID-19 concerns while in-school classes have resumed in our schools.

Considerations before choosing the hub learning option

Students registering for the hub will receive course instruction through online instruction and independent work. Each family will need to make their registration decision based on their child and family circumstance. This learning approach will require parent/guardian involvement and assistance to ensure your child is actively participating and completing assignments. You should consider the learning style of your child, their level of independence as learners, and your ability to provide additional learning support.

Individual school plans

We know families have many questions about going back to school and how things will be different in their school this September.

School plans will be based on the CBE’s re-entry plan guided by the direction from Alberta Education and the Chief Medical Officer of Health. We encourage you to review both the Alberta Education K to 12 school re-entry information: Guidance for schools re-entry Scenario 1 and the CBE Scenario 1 re-entry plan, which provides additional details and aligns with the provincial government direction. These sources of information provide the overarching measures that all schools are implementing for this school year. We continue to update our website with additional information.

School specific plans will be released by principals closer to the start of school but will not be available by the hub registration deadline.

We are creating videos to highlight some adjustments schools will make to follow the guidelines. These will be launched next week and will allow families to see some of the changes we will be implementing before the registration deadline.

Hub registration

If your family has decided to choose the hub online learning approach, registration forms are now available. You have until 4:00 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 24 to submit your registration online. To register for hub learning, please complete the appropriate form:

            Registration for Grade 1 – 9 Students

            Registration for Grade 10 – 12 Students

Registration for Independent Grade 10 – 12 Students

Registration is not limited or determined on a first come, first served basis. It will be important to have all registrations by the deadline so we can be ready with teachers and resources for the students who will be attending classes in schools and those learning from home using the hub approach.

Next steps

Once hub registration closes, we will organize students into online classes based on the number of students from individual schools and local areas.

You can expect a confirmation email from your school by Friday, Aug. 28. Students will be provided learning materials online in preparation for online learning.

Independent student online learning will begin the week of Sept. 8 – 11 and real-time teacher instruction will begin the week of Sept. 14 – 18.

In-school classes for students not registered for hub online learning will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Sincerely,

Christopher Usih
