Dual Credit – Interior Decorating

Overview

Are you passionate about style, colour, and creating amazing spaces? Learn how to design stunning interiors by stepping into the world of Interior Design with this exciting dual credit program connected to the Interior Decorating Diploma​. This two-year (4-term) diploma program is recognized by the Decorators & Designers Association of Canada (DDA).

Principles and Elements of Design (IDEC1103​​) focuses on the role of the interior decorator as a member of a project team including interior designers and allied professionals. Students will apply the principles and elements of design in the creation of client profiles and decorating solutions addressing the requirements of an interior space and client need.

Student Eligibility

Open to CBE high school students who: 

  • Are in grades 11 or 12 during the program
  • Have a strong interest in design
  • Are excited about taking a post-secondary course
  • Have completed or are on track to complete the following courses:
    • ​​ELA 20-1 or 20-2 (minimum 65%)
      *Note: there is some academic writing (APA format) required in this course. Priority will be given to Grade 12 students, and Grade 11 students who are taking English 20-1 concurrently.

Program Delivery and Location

This course is offered online, synchronous – students will meet live with their instructor during scheduled times.

Note: There may be an opportunity for an in-person visit to the Interior Decorating Studio at Bow Valley College. More information will be communicated with successful applicants.​

Workload

Students can expect a total of 3 online synchronous hours per week and approximately 5 hours of additional independent work per week for a total of 8 hours per week.

Timetable Requirements & Recommendations

Students must have no period 1 class on Tuesdays and Thursdays and have a plan on where to engage in their dual credit course during that block at school if they have a period 2 class.

  • Considerations

    • Students must have space in their full year timetable to accommodate the program delivery, location, and dates. 
    • Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the program location. Support may be available – reach out to your Off-campus Coordinator or guidance counsellor or email uniquepathways@cbe.ab.ca if you require support. 
    • Students are expected to attend every day and meet all safety and behavioural expectations of the program partner site. Failure to do so may result in removal from the program. 
    • Students must meet all course assignment, quiz and test deadlines.
    • Students must submit a personal learning schedule with their application, which outlines when they will work on their Dual Credit course work outside of class time. 
    • Students must be registered as a full-time student, taking at least one course at their home high school during the program (work experience excluded). 
    • Students will be expected to communicate with both their CBE supervising teacher and course instructor regularly.
  • How to Apply

    1. Read through the course(s) and/or program(s) of interest.
    2. Review program choice with your school Off-campus Coordinator and/or Guidance Counsellor for program readiness and timetabling concerns.
    3. You are highly encouraged to attend the Unique Pathways Information Night to ask questions of our program partners and determine if the program is a good fit for you. Connect with your Off-campus Coordinator or Guidance counsellor if you are unable to attend.
    4. Download and fill in the Dual Credit Application Form Package when available.
    5. Refer to the application checklist and ensure all items are complete.
    6. Book an appointment with your Off-campus Coordinator and/or Guidance Counselor before the deadline to complete your application, including signatures from all parties.
    7. The school will submit the application to Unique Pathways on your behalf.
