Cannabis and the CBE

The legalization and regulation of cannabis does not change our expectations for staff and students.

  • Students arrive - and remain - fit and ready to learn.
  • Employees arrive - and remain - fit and ready to perform work.

Student cannabis use at school is unacceptable as per the student code of conduct. Even if students are 18 or over, the regulation remains the same.

If a student is required to use a prescribed medication including medical marijuana during school hours, the parents, student and school must follow the steps outlined in AR 6002, Student Health Services .

Our AR 5003: volunteers states that volunteers must comply with Calgary Board of Education policies, regulations and any school rules. Volunteers must follow the employee code of conduct when volunteering with the CBE.

Additionally, all facilities and property owned and operated by the CBE are smoke-free environments.

The following questions and answers can guide you in interpreting our administrative regulations.

Cannabis Questions and Answers

For Students

What resources do you recommend for learning more about cannabis?

Can I come to school after using marijuana?

Students are not allowed to come to school after using marijuana. Students under 18 years of age are prohibited by law from using marijuana. Students over 18 are still bound by the student code of conduct and are not allowed to be under the influence of cannabis at school.

Can I use marijuana during my lunch break, away from my school?

No. You must be fit to learn at all times during the school day, including your lunch break.

I have a prescription for marijuana. Can I use it at school?

If a student is required to use a prescribed medication including medical marijuana during school hours, the parents, student and school must follow the steps outlined in AR 6002, Student Health Services.

If a student has a prescription, how and where do they use it?

As with any medical prescription, school staff will assist the student in finding a suitable place to meet their prescribed needs. Anytime medication is administered there is an expectation that supervision is involved.

How will students be disciplined if they go against the policy?

Students whose behaviour fails to comply with the CBE Student Code of Conduct will be subject to disciplinary measures up to and including suspension or expulsion. This is detailed in Administrative Regulation 6006: Progressive Student Discipline.
