Board of Trustees Accepts Resignation of Chief Superintendent

May. 03, 2023

Yesterday, the Board of Trustees accepted the resignation of Chief Superintendent Christopher Usih effective Aug. 24, 2023. He is leaving the CBE to move closer to family on the west coast, and to take up a position with the Richmond School District in Richmond, B.C.

Mr. Usih has served as Chief Superintendent for the Calgary Board of Education since December 2018 and has made a number of remarkable contributions to this organization. Some highlights include the introduction of the school support model, the equity index, a more comprehensive and focused Education Plan and the formation of CBE CARES (Collaboration for Anti-Racism and Equity Supports). All of these initiatives are focused on providing the optimal conditions for students to thrive and achieve success in their learning.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed serving in this role at the CBE,” said Chief Superintendent Usih. “I am immensely proud of all the things we accomplished together during my tenure and especially the collective work to support students and staff through three challenging years of a global pandemic.

“It has been an honour and privilege to serve alongside all CBE staff in support of students and public education in Calgary. I know students are in good hands, and will continue to thrive because of your care and compassion.”

The Board thanks Chief Superintendent Usih for his unwavering commitment to the CBE, and his dedication to putting students, equity, improvements in learning and the well-being of students and staff at the forefront of everything he has accomplished. Our system is a better place for students, staff and families due to his leadership, and the Board wishes him the best in his next role.

Chief Superintendent Usih will continue to work with superintendents and the Board of Trustees throughout the remainder of the school year to ensure a smooth transition. The Board will now commence the formal recruitment process for a new Chief Superintendent.
