CALGARY – The Board of Trustees has approved the Calgary Board of Education’s Fall 2019 Update to the 2019-20 Budget.

This is an update to the 2019-20 Budget approved on June 25, 2019 and includes a revised estimate of funding and expenditures. Also included is the implementation of budget-balancing strategies to reflect actual funding levels in the Oct. 24, 2019 provincial budget.

The Fall Budget Update includes the repurposing of $15 million of Infrastructure Maintenance and Renewal (IMR) grant funding to support certificated and non-certificated classroom-based staff and to moderate the levying of fees related to student transportation.

Other measures employed to balance the budget include use of reserves and reductions to administration, capital spending and funds directly allocated to schools. As announced in December, transportation fees are $365 per year for yellow school bus riders. In addition to the transportation fee, rebates to students using Calgary Transit have been eliminated.

The $1,380.5 billion expenditure budget supports the operation of 246 schools and 125,809 students. This is a decrease of $28.5 million from the previously approved 2019-20 budget.

As required by law, the 2019-20 budget is balanced and will now be submitted to Alberta Education.
